We deliver a number of regulated health and safety courses which are designed to minimise risk of accidents, injury, or disease. Our range of health and safety at work qualifications are intended for workers, seniors, and management and designed to impart knowledge and good practice that can protect and promote the health and welfare of all people within the work place.
Legislation and Regulatory Framework
Health and safety applies to any work environment and should be one of the core functions of any organisation. There are clear expectations for employers, employees, and visitors to sites. The courses are underpinned by a number of legislation and regulatory framework such as the umbrella Health and Safety at Work 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Human Rights Act 1998, Care Act 2014, Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, Reporting of Injuries, Disease and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR), Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). The two Level 2 awards are short, focused courses for frontline staff: Manual Handling covers general safe handling principles, while Moving People Safely goes further with a practical assessment specifically around moving and handling people. The Level 3 NVQ Certificate is a much larger qualification aimed at someone working in a dedicated health and safety role, not a replacement for either Level 2 award.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Manual Handling and Moving People Safely?
The Manual Handling award covers the principles and theory of safe manual handling in a health and social care setting, it's a short, knowledge-focused course. Moving People Safely goes further and includes a practical demonstration of safely moving and handling people specifically, rather than objects or equipment in general, which is why it carries more credits and a longer typical duration.
Do I need both, or is one enough?
It depends on your role. If your work only involves general safe handling of objects or equipment, the Manual Handling award covers that. If your role involves physically assisting or moving people, for example transfers or the use of hoists, Moving People Safely is the more specific, practical qualification for that. Many care employers ask staff to hold both.
Is the Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety for care staff doing manual handling?
Not specifically. It's a much broader Level 3 qualification for someone working in a dedicated health and safety role, covering legislation, risk assessment, and workplace safety management across any sector, not just health and social care. It isn't a replacement for, or a requirement before, either of the two Level 2 awards above.
Is the Manual Handling award really accepted by the CQC?
That's how we describe it: the qualification is designed to meet the standard the CQC expects for manual handling training in care settings. The CQC itself doesn't formally accredit individual commercial courses, it inspects whether your staff training is adequate overall, so if you need this confirmed for a specific inspection or contract, we'd recommend checking the detail with us directly.
